Epoch Times
Mozart’s final months in 1791 were dominated by two equally rich operatic works: The Magic Flute, a German Singspiel, an allegory of his own commitment to Freemasonry, in which the popular and the serious sit comfortably side by side; and La clemenza di Tito, a concise opera seria composed for the coronation of the new emperor. In Mozart's day the aristocracy favored a type of opera called "heroic" or "serious" opera (opera seria). Between 1769 and 1773, Mozart and his father took three trips to Italy, which produced three "serious" operas: Mitridate, rè di Ponte (1770), Ascanio in Alba (1771), and Lucio Silla (1772). Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on 27 January 1756 to Leopold Mozart (1719–1787) and Anna Maria, née Pertl (1720–1778), at Getreidegasse 9 in Salzburg. Salzburg was the capital of the Archbishopric of Salzburg, an ecclesiastic principality in the Holy Roman Empire (today in Austria).
First performance in 1767 Mozart’s penultimate opera, first performed in Prague in September 1791, enjoyed three decades of popularity before it disappeared from the repertory radar screen. It was the first Mozart opera produced in England: at the King’s Theatre Haymarket in 1806. From the early 1950s, La Clemenza gradually regained its former reputation.
